The company announced on May 27 that it would be extending its global ban on parties through the end of summer 2021, at the earliest. The company currently has a 16-person cap on occupancy per property, and anything more than that would be considered a party and would be in violation of the party ban. “Guests who are reported for throwing a disruptive party or violating our rules on gatherings of more than 16 people are subject to suspension or removal from Airbnb’s platform,” the company states on their website. “We may also remove listings if we determine that a host has authorized a party that violates this policy.” This isn’t a new policy for the company, but it’s the first time the ban will be in place for the entire summer. In Aug. 2020, Airbnb introduced the global ban on parties, which the company says was first enacted because COVID cases were spiking and vaccines were not yet available. So why keep the ban now? Countries across the globe are behind the U.S. in terms of COVID containment, but Airbnb executives have also recently discussed the disruption these parties can cause in communities, pandemic or not. “We know that parties aren’t just a health risk, they also are a neighborhood nuisance,” Brian Chesky, chief executive officer for Airbnb, said during a May 14 interview with Yahoo Finance. “So we want to be really good community players all over the world.” The company says it will “provide another update on the future of the policy” at the end of the summer. According to a statement from the company, Airbnb will continue to implement “numerous systems aimed at helping to prevent unauthorized parties.” This means that users will not be able to access the website’s “event-friendly” search filter through the end of summer 2021, and “parties and events allowed” sections will be removed from the house rules of available listings during this time.ae0fcc31ae342fd3a1346ebb1f342fcb In July, the company is also restricting guests without a history of positive reviews in the U.S. from making one-night reservations for entire home listings during the weekend of July 4. And the company has also started an initiative in the U.S., Canada, U.K., France, and Spain that “restricts guests under the age of 25 from booking entire home listings in their local area under certain circumstances.” The company will continue its Neighborhood Support Line, which allows neighbors to report issues related to party disruptions directly to Airbnb. Neighbors to nearby Airbnb listings can submit a form or call the company, and Airbnb will contact the host and pursue an investigation into the matter. “We will not tolerate behavior that disrupts neighborhoods or violates the trust of our Host community,” Airbnb says.
